The Mathematics Behind It

The Major Flaw of BMI

It's important to understand what BMI actually is: it's a measure of density, not body fat. The formula has no way to distinguish between a pound of muscle and a pound of fat. Because muscle is denser than fat, professional athletes and bodybuilders almost always score in the "Overweight" or "Obese" categories despite being in peak physical condition.

Who It Is For

The standard adult BMI thresholds (where 18.5 to 24.9 is considered 'Normal') are statistically useful for average adult populations over the age of 20. The formula is not calibrated for children, teenagers, pregnant women, or the elderly.
